Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was one of the pioneers of new styles of art that led to the birth of post-impressionist art. Gauguin became part of a group of artists who gathered in Pont-Aven, France, whose aim was to create art that combined (or synthesized) the subject matter with the artist’s feelings about the subject and the aesthetic concerns of line, color and form. Gauguin became interested in primitivism and went to Tahiti, from 1891 to 1893 and then in 1895 until his death in 1903.
